GlossaryMulti-bagger

Multi-bagger

A multi-bagger is a stock that has risen to several multiples of what an investor originally paid for it, most commonly used once a position has at least doubled (a "two-bagger"), though the term gets used loosely for any large multiple, five times, ten times, or more. It describes the size of a gain, not how it happened or how long it's likely to last.

The label really only applies looking backward. A stock can be a multi-bagger and still be in the middle of a sharp pullback at the same time, since the term measures the total move from an earlier low, not where the price is heading next. A large multi-bagger gain earned over a short period is also, by definition, a large amount of value that can come back out just as fast if the reasons behind the run turn out to be temporary.
