EssentialsInvesting 101How Investing Works

What is Retirement Investing?

Retirement investing is the practice of investing with the specific goal of building enough wealth to support yourself once you stop working. What sets it apart from other investing goals is the time horizon involved, which is often decades, and that makes certain choices more sensible than they would be for a shorter term goal.

Why does the long time horizon matter so much?

Because a multi decade time horizon lets compound interest do most of the heavy lifting. Money invested in your twenties has forty or more years to grow before you need it, which means even modest, steady contributions can grow into a substantial sum. It also means you can afford to ride out market downturns along the way, since you have time to recover before you need the money.

Should retirement investing look different depending on your age?

Generally, yes. Investors further from retirement can typically afford to hold a larger share of stocks, since they have time to recover from volatility. As retirement gets closer, many investors gradually shift some of their portfolio toward more stable assets like bonds, to reduce the risk of a market downturn hitting right when they need to start withdrawing money. This gradual shift is sometimes called a glide path.

Does retirement investing require special accounts?

In many countries, yes. Governments often offer tax advantaged retirement accounts that either reduce your taxes now or let your investments grow without being taxed along the way. The exact rules vary a great deal by country, but it is worth checking what tax advantaged options exist where you live, since they can meaningfully increase how much you keep over the long run.

Why does this matter?

Because retirement is one of the few financial goals almost everyone shares, and it rewards patience more than almost any other kind of investing. Starting early, contributing consistently, and resisting the urge to make short term changes based on market noise are the habits that matter most over a multi decade horizon.
